THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL
“The little match girl stuck another match against the wall, a blue light spread around, and she could see clearly that her grandmother was smiling at her.”
Surely each of us has heard the fairy tale “The Little Match Girl” by Andersen, but perhaps not everyone knows Andersen himself met a real “little match girl” in real life on a cold winter night in Copenhagen.
This girl had a gaunt face, shivering in her tattered clothes. She lit a match every now and then to keep warm. The flickering light of the match illuminated her beautiful dreams: a warm fireplace, a rich feast, a sparkling Chirstmas tree, and the image of her kind grandmother that she missed so much. But those dreams vanished quickly when the match went out. The girl was once again in the cold and hungry. She lit all the mathces, clung to the last flickering illusions, and then fell into an eternal sleep in the cold.
The story of “The Little Match Girl” carries within it another layer of tragedy, one that few are aware of. Touched by the girl’s plight, Andersen promised to return and bring her a gift. However, life’s distractions proved too much, and he inadvertently forgot his promise. When news of the girl’s passing reached him, Andersen was overcome with remorse and regret.
Beyond the pages of fairy tales, “The Little Match Girl” still exists silently in real life, sneaking into every dark corner or right in the middle of bustling streets, reminding us of the unfortunate lives that need to be sheltered and loves.
