La Artisan – “Saint Giong” Square Scarf

SAINT GIONG

“Go tell the king to forge me an iron horse, an iron sword, an iron armor, and an iron helmet, and I will drive out the invaders!”

Saint Giong, also known as Phu Dong Thien Vuong, is one of the four immortals in Vietnamese folklore. In ancient times, when the aggressive An invaders encroached upon the border, King Hung the Sixth anxiously sent envoys to seek out talented individuals to fight the enemy. At that time, in the village of Giong, there was a three-year-old boy who still could not speak. However, upon hearing the news of the invaders, he suddenly uttered his first words, “Mother, call the envoy in here for me!” This call for national salvation transformed Giong into an extraordinary hero. He stretched out his arms, lifted a bamboo tree by the roadside, and swung it to defeat the An invaders. After the victory over the An invaders, Giong took off his armor, swung his iron whip, and flew into the sky.

The image of Saint Giong has become a symbol of patriotism and national pride. Giong is a testament to the famous affirmation in “Binh Nghi Dao Cao”: “Although strength and weakness differ from time to time, there are always heroes in every era.”
