LEGEND OF HAI BA TRUNG
“One, we vowed to cleanse the waters of revenge
Two, we aim to rebuild the legacy of the Hung clan
Three, we cry out against the injustice in our hearts
Four, we seek to fulfill this mission completely”
Trung Trac and Trung Nhi were the daughters of General Lac, belonging to the lineage of Hung Vuong. Trung Trac’s husband was Thi Sach, the son of General Lac in Chu Dien district. The two noble families of generals joined forces to overthrow the rule of the Han dynasty. At that time, Thi Sach was treacherously plotted against by To Dinh, a Han official.
The Trung sisters were determined to lead a rebellion to repay their country’s debts and seek vengeance for their family. In March of the year 40, the two sisters initiated their uprising at the Hat River’s mouth, rallying all the Thanh Thien, Tu Danh, Nhat Nam, Hop Pho, and dozens of heroic leaders followed the Trung sisters. Under the capable leadership of the Trung sisters, they won back the following regions: Giao Chi, Cuu Chan, Nhat Nam, and Hop Pho. The Han governor’s soldiers could not avoid quickly collapsing, and their soldiers fled in fear, leaving behind their possessions, weapons, and insignia as they retreated to the mouth of the river.
This was the first time in world history that an army led by young women, with no martial training, and their soldiers defeated an established army of authority. Under the Trung sisters’ symbolized the achievement of women’s strength. The Trung Sisters’ great uprising deeply inspired the country and laid the groundwork for future independence, proving beyond any doubt that women in Vietnam were ready to defend the land when the enemy came to their doorstep.
